On the topic of deforestation, one thing you have to remember is that all construction seems to lack proper materials. You remove funds from the treasury, you gain things. Resources only seem to translate into shmuckers. Now, here's the real question. Could you possibly cut down a forest hex and have the gathered materials turned into funds via moneymancy?

Resources only seem to translate into shmuckers. Now, here's the real question. Could you possibly cut down a forest hex and have the gathered materials turned into funds via moneymancy?

It makes sense, although you might have some restrictions on which hexes you can use for that. And we know that Erfworld has a resource-gathering setup where you can exhaust some types of resources after gathering them; remember that GK had been "mined out" until Sizemore lifted the undiscovered gem veins to the surface. So quite possibly you could get money by logging a forest hex, but once you hit some predefined amount of money the trees vanish and you can no longer do any logging on that hex. And if you can't actively plant more trees, you might have to wait quite a while before that resource hex refreshes, assuming that it will ever do so.

Suppose you don't convert those tree to schmuckers. The gems mined appeared to remain in the form of gems.
Can you then utilize those cut-down trees to build something - without spending schmuckers on it?

Suppose you have a forested area that you want to get rid of in a hurry - can you start a forest fire? If you can, what happens to the terrain type after the fire has burned out? Would the fire continue until it ran out of forest hexes to burn into, or could something stop it, like a hex boundary?

A quick note that occurred to me on the topic of the impossibility of changing terrain types. When Sizemore made that comment about modifying the terrain type, he was referring to how the Volcano Uncroaking in one action turned the terrain of at least part of Gobwin Knob from mountain (or extinct volcano, if that's an applicable distinction) to active volcano. A change like that would be almost impossible in our world with our technology, akin to turning desert into forest. It's a change that the world as a system is unlikely or unable to produce naturally, and Sizemore (in the link) did it in a single turn.

That's not to say that changing terrain types isn't impossible, that things like deforestation and desertification don't occur in Erfworld, just that Sizemore's statement isn't necessarily expressing an absolute condition.
