It doesn't make you sound old. It makes you sound coddled and weak, like your eyes are somehow being irrepairably damaged by staring at the wrong combination of colored lights. Also, I agree wholeheartedly.

The contrast for the dark brown text on the darker of the 2 brown backgrounds could be the issue. One option would be to darken the text (or lighten the darker of the 2 backgrounds).

Also, the colour for forums with new posts doesn't stand out quite so much.

I agree that the overall look definitely matches the site better. I think its the text colors, particularly the red text, that bothers me.

And, now that I think about it, most of the forums I've spent a lot of time on have had blue themes. That might have something to do with my reaction to this.

Oddly enough I seem to be getting used to it, now. Maybe the reason it was jarring at first is just because most forums have a white/blue color scheme.

I'm digging it. Decent mix of colors. Pretty streamlined too. Now we just need a banner to replace the phpbb. Any takers?

Using a browser with site-specific user stylesheets (Opera), this one helped:

Maybe instead of black a darker brown would do, too.
