Blog list

Postby gmpalmer » Mon May 04, 2009 2:47 pm

I suspect these postings will show a lot more variation than the Webcomix list. . .

Unqualified Reservations -- this site is a mix of fascinating political commentary and poetry. Be prepared for meter, rhyme, and 50,000 word prose posts. Updates on Thursdays.
Lutheran Surrealism -- the off-the-head thoughts of a philosophy professor in upstate New York. Covers life, liberty, and the pursuit of humor.
Ted Rall Online -- Ted is the smartest mainstream political commentator out there. He bows to no one and calls 'em like he sees 'em.
Orson Scott Card's Hatrack River -- Card's observations on everything from toilet paper to the election process.
Ron Silliman -- Silliman is the 800lb gorilla of poetry blogging. Or perhaps the goliath?
Me! -- maybe I would like to be the David of poetry blogging? o_-

I don't think I could survive Orson Scott Card's Blog. The books I read of his were good, but I disagree with much of his politics and social ideas.

http://www.fullyramblomatic.com From the mind of Zero Punctuation Yahtzee, a lot of hidden gems here, and good updates.
http://www.sirlin.net Sirlin is an interesting guy. Especially when it comes to playing video games. I thought his book was interesting. It focuses on playing to win, and discussion on several game types.

I have a crapload of things on my RSS reader. Not going to discuss the blogs I get through my LJ-feed in any detail, but it's stuff like John Scalzi's "Whatever," Wil Wheaton and Randall "XKCD" Munroe's blogs, and so forth.

(And redtophat: Yeah, definitely agreed with you re: OSC's blog. *shiver* )

Anyway. RSS reader has four categories:
Gaming
These are the gaming-related blogs I look at. Most of these are focused on old-school (OD&D/BECMI/1e AD&D), but they have a few generalist posts around.
http://advancedgaming-theory.blogspot.com/
http://oldguyrpg.blogspot.com/
http://grognardia.blogspot.com/
http://jrients.blogspot.com/
http://monstersandmanuals.blogspot.com/
http://peopletobe.blogspot.com/
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/ (PC games, not RPGs like the other ones here)
http://sandboxofdoom.blogspot.com/
http://trollsmyth.blogspot.com/

Of these, I strongly recommend Rock, Paper, Shotgun and Trollsmyth. (I like all of them, obviously.)

A Larger World
(These are the things I read because I feel I should know more about them)
http://abovethelaw.com/ (Called the "Law Tabloid," it's a very regular and informative blog targeted towards law students)
http://www.infrastructurist.com/ (discusses infrastructure development, primarily within the USA)
http://likearadiotelescope.wordpress.com/ (Science blog maintained by a friend of mine)

Military History/Practice
While I'm going to law school next year, my BA (which will be awarded next week, if things go to schedule) is in history - specifically military history. These are blogs which I check regularly, whether dealing with military history, or, as is more common, military affairs.

http://abumuqawama.blogspot.com/
http://armchairgeneralist.typepad.com/my_weblog/
http://warhistorian.org/wordpress
http://globalguerrillas.typepad.com/globalguerrillas/
http://smallwarsjournal.com/blog/
http://informationdissemination.blogspot.com/ (Naval affairs blog)

Of these, I strongly recommend Abu Muqawama and Global Guerrillas. GG, in particular, has some very interesting takes on asymmetrical warfare in the modern era. (It would probably be a favorite of Parson's.)

News

(Note: I also check the built-in BBC feed in Firefox)

http://english.aljazeera.net//default.html (Al Jazeera is not affiliated with Al Qaeda, as much as Fox News & Co. might like to spread that malicious rumor. They're a valid news source, with some truly excellent reporting. OTOH, take their reports on Israel itself with a grain of salt.)
http://www.dawn.com/ (Pakistan's main English newspaper)
http://kristof.blogs.nytimes.com/ (Nick Kristof's blog at NYT; Kristof is one of the few kickass journalists we have these days)
http://krugman.blogs.nytimes.com/ (Paul Krugman, very accomplished economist)
http://www.salon.com/opinion/greenwald/ ... greenwald/ (Glenn Greenwald's column on Salon; very solid and informed political posts)

I'm going to add fivethirtyeight.com to this shortly, I think. Excellent political analysis.

Some of my favourites from my RSS reader:

Parenting Science News - Articles about parenting and children that has actual, verifiable, quantifiable data behind it and not piles of folk wisdom and anecdotal evidence
Make It and Love It - Crafts in all sorts of media from fabric to paper to wood. Also some great home decorating ideas.
Bras and Body Image - Mostly reviews of bras, but also some great pieces on feminism and body acceptance. The author's much more casual Tumblr account is also good reading, though mostly sourced from other authors. Note: Semi-NSFW on both of these links as they do deal with underwear reviews and body types.
