Barbarians! The Lost Tribe of [____]

Postby 0100010 » Wed Oct 30, 2013 1:13 pm

It was supposed to be a easy mission. Long range scouts had found a ruin, and Overlady Martha wanted to find out what was in it.

It was far away, the exploratory force had to take a small ship to get there They had lost one their scout to a well hidden feral Leopard in the jungle. That should have been the first clue that this venture might not have had the Titans favor. A couple of low level stabbers had fallen to mosquito swarms next. Nasty buggers, Easy to kill but sometime if you got damaged by then, something happened, which caused damage to not get healed naturally at the morning of each turn for several turns. Typically this is only dangerous to low 1st or 2nd level units with low hits, who didn't have total hits high enough to survive before natural healomacy eliminated the strange condition after a few turns. The explorers theorized that a healomancer could have easily removed the affliction, but their side didn't have any. They probably would not have been sent either if they did.

The only caster the explorers had with them was a once level 1 Findomancer. A natural choice, given the searching to be done in the ruins. It was a risk, but Overlady martha wanted the caster to possibly level up. She send a decent guard force.

Unfortunately the guard force wasn't enough. The ruins had been guarded by a unknown group of heavies, large ape creatures wielding stone maces that were good at hiding. Now the exploring party lay mostly dead, but at least all the barbarian heavies were dead also. The leader of the expedition was a level 5 warlord. Was. Dead now like so many others. All that was left was the once level 1 warlord (now just leveled to 2), who became the defacto leader when the unthinkable happened.

The Findamancer had received a thinkagram, the capital was under attack it said. Then nothing. By the end of the turn, after the battle with the heavy apes, the lost survivors found themselves as barbarians down to the last man.

It was a motley group.
1 level 2 Warlord (just leveled)
1 level 2 Findamancer. (just leveled)
1 level 2 Knight (just leveled)
2 level 1 Stabbers
1 level 1 Archer
1 level 1 Scout
1 level 1 Ogre

Fortunately the surviving warlord had salvaged the fallen commander's purse. They figured their upkeep would last for about 6 turns, then they have to start foraging in this unknown land. A token force had been left with the boat, but without a commander present they probably all disbanded. The boat might still be there though, it was a crafted turnamancy-dollamancy thing. more magic item than unit.

OOC:
So just an idea for discussion, light RP game, free form rules. Cooperative play so no need for PMing stuff. Minimum of 2 players max of seven for the above roles. (Ogre is a heavy NPC with the fabrication special) If anyone in interested in co-DMing though that would help a lot, as this may not be a fast running game dependent on my time availability.

Draw up a character, pick a name, describe their appearance, Describe their trip to this new land, describe how the survived the battle at the ruins. elicit their thoughts on what has happen.

Each character has a basic weapon and set of armor or clothing. Describe their livery and pop-culture theme(s), (include a picture if you want) best one gets to be used/selected. This needs to be a heavily player driven sand-box game. I'll just throw things in occasionally to make things interesting.

It had seemed a standard juant. Piotr, her stack leader had had asked for volunteers too, Titans disband it. She should have known better, Vilmar had even told her " Don voluntir fer nuffin' " was his advice..good advice too, she should have listened. The first sign was her sea-sickness on the voyage over, then there was that damnable leopard and then those Titans accursed flies. She had thought her luckamancy boosted when she didn't get sick...again she should have known better. The Titans were saving their best for her.

The ruins looked like a gift from the Titans when they first saw them... a clearing in the incessant jungle. So happy to see them that the commander hadn't even scouted them properly. Luckily her archer squad were at the jungle fringes covering their path when the ambush kicked off. Even still, large hulking brutes with stone clubs materialized from both jungle and ruins meaning the archers had no clear line of fire as friendlies were intermingled with the apes. Somehow with much rushing, dodging and checking..and a large slice of help from the Titans she survived.

The ambush had been triggered after the lone scout had come back from a cursory look and the captain had taken his word and brought his men up. It was signaled by a hooting and howling from the forest beyond the ruins as though a monkey troupe was being massacred back there. "It's a trick..." Piotr had warned them "...Let the stabbers take care of them. They're already in the ruins. Keep your eyes and bows trained on the path, lads. "
Lads? eh ? She'd call Piotr on that slight when she joined him to stand in front of the Titans. Not that she objected to being called one of the lads...as she could drink, bet and boop along with the best of them... but you had to draw the line somewhere.
Her attention diverted by Piotr's slander she only just caught the looming shape on the edge of her vision. Turning she loosed early...only to see the wayward shot take another rising shape under the jaw-line. Massive hulk..too close..club swinging. She winced, anticipating the blow, only to have the bow ripped out of her hands as she felt the swish of the club. Instictive re-load,.. no bow, she thrusts with the pitiful arrow. Arrrgh... her arrow to the eye and his club to the shoulder in the same instant. Reeling in a wash of pain she barely noticed her companions falling around her nor Piotr yelling "Swords, lads... draw your swords"
Stumbling she fumbled for her sword, just as a crashing hulk sends her sprawling. Muscles on fire she scrambles to her feet, her squad buried in the onslaught of apes. Retreat..reform..re-engage...just like she'd been drilled.... but reform with whom. ? All around her a struggling mass of men and apes slashing in confusion and pain at friend and foe alike. It was then she saw her warlord trying to hold two at bay with his spear while flailing at another with his broken shield. No sign of Piotr but, disband it, at least she'd go down helping her captain. She charged in his direction a gutteral scream on her lips.
White pain shot through her ankle as she caught the creeper and tumbled into darkness. Titans... was this it ?
It certainly didn't smell like the halls of the Titans. Nor should it have been so dark, dank and dusty. A glow filtered over her shoulder. Rising and turning she blinked at the light.
It was what seemed like ages before she realized she was in some sort of cellar. The noise of the battle above brought her senses around just as the light was blocked by a looming figure . It advanced peering into the darkness... why didn't it see her ? Blessing her luck she drew... "Shhhhiccck" The shape froze at the sound. Putting in all her strength she thrust straight and true. Through the chest. It fell. Dragging her sword with it as it stumbled backwards into the light.
Finally the pain in her leg caught up with her as she stooped to gather its fallen club. Another ape in the doorway blocking the light. It advanced. Howling as the sword appeared through it's midrift. Trying to turn to it's unseen attacker it went down as her wildly swung club burst at it's temple and sent it's head driving at a sickening angle into it's shoulder.
She grimaced up at a friendly face.
" Who's down there ? Friend or foe ? "
"Friend ! "... "Magda !"... " Level 1 archer, Piotr's squad "
Her squad broken and few if any of her companions left alive she crawled from the hole in the cellar that she'd managed to defend...a grim smile on her lips.
Well at least they could reform...and Titans be blessed ...there was the Findamancer. He'd survived so at least they'd be able to find their way home.

....However the Titans had one final hand to play.......

{placeholder for Magda - 1st level Archer... will do stats and equip later}
[Edited to provide more details of the battle]

They ordered him on the mission, "Find the Ruins" they said "Then you can come back". He did not mind, this was an opportunity. He could venture out into new tiles and feel the different terrain types underneath his feet.

After the boat ride, he was having second thoughts. This was terrain that he had not yet seen, and instead of the thrill he imagined, he was instead filled with a kind of fear. Still he kept his head up, "New places are exciting." He assured himself. Fear was a luxury that he could not allow himself. The Titan's themselves seemed to be looking out for him after that. A leopard had attacked him and another scout, yet he had been spared. The bugs tooled the lives of many stabbed, yet he pulled through. It was not until they reached the ruins that this Titan given grace ran short. He had scouted thoroughly to the best of his Level 1 ability, and had found nothing, not a single hint of the heavies that he later learned occupied the ruins. It was his report that moved the party forward, people trusted scouts and he had failed their trust. He had walked them into a slaughter. It was only in the after math, after their units had been massacred, after the survivors turned barbarian that he realized why the Titans spared him. Not because he was favored, he was saved to bear witness to his faults and to suffer for them so long as he was alive.

Will's livery is simple, a thin shirt and a long pair of blue pants of a durable material. He originally had a thicker woolen jacket that came with the outfit, but he has not worn it sense they moved into the jungle climate. Pop culture wise he draws inspiration from the Student named Danforth from H.P Lovecraft's at the mountains of madness.

If this game is still open I'll join.

Duke Minsmeal looked out over the carnage that was his stack. He thought back to his first turn. He had been popped in a level one city by the name of Butchery (Pronounced Bue-cherry) under the reign of King Richard the 3rd of the Columbii. The Duke had been ordered to bring 40 of the 50 Ogres in Butchery (Which severed has a Houseing city for the Kingdoms reserve of Natural Allies) to the king where he was besieging a city that belonged to Fraince (Pronounced Fray-nse). It was a 10 turn trip but it was not unpleasant. The Ogres were great chefs and could grill, Bake and smoke with the best of them. The best one was Marco Pierre, a pale white skinned Ogre of about 2000 turns.

The moment the Duke and his entourage arrived they saw the King under attack and in need of aid so they charged into the hex to give battle to the foe. The Duke was at the front has they entered the city hex. That's when it happened. The King was struck by a lightning bolt and the King Croaked. The knights in his stack had already been wounded and could not soak up enough of the damage before croaking themselves. Thankfully the Chief Warlady Martha had been promoted to heir Designate so the side did not disband. She took the ogres and told me to guard the remains of the king with Marco. She said, "If only you had arrived a little sooner, the King might still live."She than turned toward the Wall and Charged.

Marco looked to me and said, "Don't take it to hard kid, sometimes the meat you find is good and other times... WATCH OUT!"

He leapt forward threw me out of the way has a sword stroke fell right where I had been. There were 4 enemy men wearing studded leather and carrying falchions. The enemy wanted the body and they would try to take it by any means necessary. Marco swung his Sword (which, indecently, looked exceedingly like a Butcher knife and was often used for one) 3 times and it shredded through the man's armor and into him. He had croaked before the 3rd blow fell. I lunged forward but the man parried my thrust. He then gave a hard shove throwing me off balance. He than stepped forward and tried for a swift decapitation. The only thing that saved me was the fact that I fell on my but. Well that and the fact that Marco split him like a block of cheese. I started to rise while Marco drove back the foe. I looked up and realized one of the Crossbowmen on the wall was taking Aim at Marco and I could feel in my belly that it would not end well for Marco and me. I ran forward silently ordering Marco to fall back to me, post haste. He started backing up ever so slowly and then he saw an opportunity and he took it. The two soldiers had stepped to close together so Marco swung and took both of them with one swing. The Crossbowman also took his opportunity. Marco was dead just moments before he got there.

After that he had returned to Butchery were he had served has Governor until a call for volunteers had gone out. It was a chance to earn the favor of the over lady and a chance to make up for past mistakes.

He and his crew of 8 stabbers had been tasked with securing the other 1 of the four sectors that the ruin had been divided into. His was on the far side so he figured he'd go around the edge. He looked carefully into the thick green foliage. There were beautiful red flowers surrounded by green leaves a good six inches long by about 3 inches wide but there was something odd about that flower 10 feet away from the stack. It was brown instead of red. He drew his sword so that he could cut the flower from the stem and give it to that pretty archer girl. He realized the flowers were monkeys and that there were probably a good two dozen right here. He started hacking the Camouflaged monkeys to pieces. He shouted, "This is too easy!" That's when the Giant Apes that were charging his stack from behind let out a terrible ear wrenching roar that made the very ground shake. He turned and started to engage the first of the 16 Fruit Brutes, but his force was too small to really hurt these creatures so he gave the mental order to retreat has he shouted, "Has I said too easy!" His men were running back but 3 had already been killed in those first 30 seconds of combat. That's when the Duke realized exactly how serious the situation was. Fruit bruits were attacking from both sides. Thankfully there were 5 extra stabbers close at hand. The Duke ordered them to stack with him against the 15 fruit bruits that were chasing his stack. He shouted, "Don't give in, don't give up!" Blow after blow was struck to each side. The lifeblood of all 10 stabbers flowed upon the ground has the Duke struck a critical blow on the last engaged fruit brute. He looked around to realize that there were only 6 others left of the Colombii tribe. He had failed his men Twice now, it wouldn't happen a third time he silently swore to himself.

Minsmeal, Duke of Butchery, stands at an average height with what appears to be a bit of extra meat on his bones. Not too much so that he has flabby arms and all that but enough to know he enjoys a good meal. His skin is fair but well tanned. His Hair is black and slicked to either side with an even part down the middle. His eyes are a deep hazelnut speckled with olive green. He wears green Britches and a white tunic. Over the Tunic he has a chain shirt and over this a Blue Tabard. Upon the Tabard is his personal insignia. Two butcher knive Ogre swords crossed behind a plate. His sword is 3 feet in length, 1.5 inches broad and sharp along only one edge, plus a sharp tip.

(Modified to both give more details and a better back story)

Place holder for Duke Minselmeal the 2nd level warlord. So shall we begin?

Werebiscuit has the archer at present. The scout is available if LittleLoki is gone.

The Findamancer though will probably be an important role.

The exploration party (when it was much larger) was in the ruin hex when Overlady Martha had ended their side's turn. This was a necessity as upon discovering the ruins. Those units with leadership immediately knew that the act of exploring the ruins consumed all move, and thus an entire turn must be devoted to searching.

Their next turn had not started at dawn, which was the first sign of trouble. Thus the barbarians had appeared, a stack of 8 Fruit Brutes, giant gray-furred apes wielding stone clubs, had attack from one of the adjacent jungle hexes. The exploratory force, consisting of five stacks of 8. perhaps could have taken them. They may have been heavies, but most of the Brutes were level 1, save for one which seems to have been an alpha brute. The titans had other plans, and chose this turn to also spawn a stack of heavies, another 8 Fruit Brutes, in the ruin hex itself, along with several smaller feral monkeys. This was too much to handle, and during the course of the battle the force was slain down to the 8 that now gathered together. Fate wasn't down though because at some point prior to the start of their turn, yet after the barbarian turn had completed, these field units became barbarians themselves. They were stuck yet again by a cruel twist of fate's timing without move, until next turn when they would get to move first at dawn as barbarians, and possibly spent that turn exploring the ruins if the leadership units so chose to do so. Until then all they could do now while off turn and during the night, was roam the surface of the ruin hex, gather their dead, and prepare to make camp.

It was a Ruin Hex, with a jungle subtype. Incomplete walls and broken pathways of yellow stone formed a four squared grid, all intertwined with dense foilage, creeper vines sprouted bright red flowers, and a few trees poking out of the roofs of ruined structures. In one section, a stairway in a plaza led downward into darkness. In another section sat a ruined building, the only one that was intact, with a single stone door. The third section held a well, minus the rope.

The fourth section a shallow pit amidst a ruined building filled with decaying bones, several of them humanoid. This seemed odd to the explorers, as corpse should depop, and not leave behind any bones...unless of course they had at one point been harvested for rations. But you shouldn't be able to harvest the bones of men right? Right?

The possibly last 7 living Columbii tribe members stacked together. Noticebly absent was Luglug the Ogre who did not stack with them. He had his own things to say.

"Cheif Luglug, now chief of Luglug twibe, not allied now, must make rations for self." The ogre then proceeded to butcher a Fruit Brute corpse, make himself a fine sleeping fur from its hide, and built a fire to roast the bushmeat on it. He sat down and ate the roasted meat, seeming to carry on as normal.

The unclaimed corpses of friend and foe would depop at the dawn.

RETCON:
I changed the Twoll to an Ogre because I wanted this unit to be a natural ally. and Twolls seemed to be a popped unit. They're still similar to twolls. They are heavy units and have the fabrication special.

Since I understand us to be starting.
I would like Magda and the Findamancer (Assuming Gfly or Werebiscuit don't have other plans) to come with me to discuss our options with Luglug. While we talk I want the Knight, scout and stabbers in one stack to thoroughly search the entire hex for anything that can be used, rations and supplies for mending equipment.
Unless anyone has other thoughts?
Here is a list of information questions, feel free to answer when it's best for you:
Can I get some more details on what we know of the land around about?
Can I also get some more information on the capabilities of the Knight?
Can also like to get the stats for all units?
How many shmuckers are in my purse?

If Werebiscuit wants, he can swap playing the archer for playing the Knight, (which can also be a Archer capable unit if desired), though not required.
As for Luglug, Columbii units changed to barbarian near the end of the fight. It was at this point in time that the alliance with Luglugs tribe was broken, because one side in the alliance ceased to exist.

You're not sure why he is claiming to be a chief yet, but that's good because you can only negotiate with chiefs. It seems you have newly discovered that negotiating with natural allies is still possible to do even if you're a barbarian commander.

It took 47 turns across the ocean, expending collective move via sailing AND using the built in move inherent to the turnamancy/dollamancy boat, to reach the shore of this far-away land. It then took 5 turns of very rough inland travel from the coastal hex through jungle, and at least one river crossing to get to the ruins.

So far you have encountered Ocean Hexes, Sea Hexes, Reef Hexes (good thing you had a findamancer to find a way through them) Beach Hexes, Light Jungle Hexes, Jungle Hexes, Heavy Jungle Hexes, Jungle Hexes with River (good thing Luglug could make a raft), Jungle With Hills, and a Ruin Hex with Jungle Subtype. (At some point I'll make a map for you all w/ hexagrapher)

As for the Knight and Unit states, just pick one of the various homebrew rule systems others have already made and stat them up yourself, just so long everyone agrees on what is being used.
I'd keep the Knight somewhat vague for now in case someone joins and wants to use that character.

Originally our purse was at zero. A level 2 warlord has a maximum purse limit of 2,000 schmuckers. (The Findamancer's purse is also capped at 2k, but is currently empty) As for the total, the first thing you did was loot the fallen level 5 warlord's purse. (however it doesn't mean that he had 5k on him) Find out the total upkeep (w/out rations) cost of all 8 units and multiple that number by 6. This is how much is in your purse. If this value is over 4000, (2k for the warlaord and 2k for the caster) the amount over 4k is going to disappear at dawn if its not spent somehow.
