If an unled unit has a valid target already without moving, he will attack that target. If an unled unit does not have an immediately valid target, he choose a valid target within range.
Proximity of the target is not a primary factor in deciding who his target will be, so no, you shouldn't assume that the elves won't charge the squishies unless they're already 'in combat'.

I'm pretty sure that BLAND's opening move will have the enemy archer gone before he can fire another shot. (He moves first and I believe only one of the spearmen in is range to guard.) We need to prevent the other units from moving forward if we want to keep our casters. If Yuri and Rolf were to move to D7 and G7, I believe that would put them in attack range of all the remaining enemies.

Things are now not looking good for the elves. Cupid, on his own, could now slowly hunt them down throughout the rest of the day. Tod and T. Coil have gained enough experience to level. However, the Heavies are starting to look a little rough around the edges....

T. Coil has leveled up, T. Coil gains +2 Combat, +1 Defense, +4 Hits; T. Coil has learned the spell Hoboken.

T. Coil's action will now be as follows: If an enemy has 7 or fewer hits T. Coil will cast Hiya on them; otherwise T. Coil will cast Hoboken on the enemy with lowest hits.

Do T. Coil and myself get immediate benefits from our levels or does that wait until the end of combat?

Fixed, and corrected the kill notice in the results.

Results kick in immediately. The last 2 entries in the results show the stack already benefiting from improved leadership.

For the 1st level, it will take you 3 kills, BLAND. It costs 5 XP to get to 2nd level. You are currently getting 2 XP per kill for these units. Leadership is gaining an additional 1 XP per kill for units under their leadership.
The Shockamancer only needed 2, since he was also getting experience for casting - 0.5 XP per spell cast. The reason for casting XP is to allow units like hippymancers and healmancers to level without needing to kill for it, although it would take longer.
And as I've pointed out earlier, croakamancers get full XP for any kill their uncroaked makes. I'll note that a valid tactic is for the croakamancer to order his undead to attack right before he does, allowing him to get 2 strikes on the same target to increase the chance of getting the kill...

Well that rustles my jimmies. 1XP for doing nothing, while I get 2 for the kill? Scratch that, leader's where it's at.

Whatevs. Shoot the Spearman. I assume I get the first attack, which means that boop is mine. If the spearman is dead by the time Will gets to aim, shoot whoever. They've got the same amount of hits.

BLAND - you do realize you can probably 1-shot a warrior !! Rolf called Dibs on the Spearman.

10 com + 2 learedship - their 5 def gives you 7. Meaning an average roll of 7 will one shot a warrior. Rolf is out there taking hits for you... don't get him angry... you wouldn't like him when hes angry :mrgreen:
