The Colonel - I've just noticed that I did not put your capital in the right place. Will correct when I next edit the map.

There is still room for others to join, but we can get underway.

48 hours to post your arguments (unless everyone posts sooner, and we can end turn and roll)

Mrs Nobblytwink looked up from her basket of washing, and pulled some pegs from her mouth.
"Good morning, Herbert."
A figure stepped from the shadows, shaking his head. It was impossible to sneak up on Mrs Nobblytwink. It had taken all of his craft and skill, and he'd never made it closer than fifty yards.
"Good morning, Mrs Nobblytwink."
She gave him a small smile and a bob of the head.
"One day you will get too close, and I will have to cut off your nose."
Mrs Nobblytwink gave a little chortle, and pointed to her War Hatchet, leaning against the washing basket.
"What do you have to tell me today, Herbert? What information have your watchers brought me?"
Nothing ever happened anywhere in the world without being observed by a hedgepig. And nothing was observed that was not reported to the head of the Watchers, Herbert Tuffrail.
"Our previous information has been confirmed, Mrs Nobblytwink. The several powers to the north are expanding their borders. They grow more powerful by the turn."
Mrs Nobblytwink pulled a sheet from the basket and hung it on the line.
"Well," she said. "We shall have to see about that."

The Empire of the Rising Hedgepig will assemble a GRAND ARMY.
* The Empire has EXCELLENT INFANTRY, so any Army will understandably be GRAND.
* The Empire is SIZEABLE, so there is no shortage of Cities to pop the necessary units, or funds to maintain them.
* Mrs Nobblytwink is an IMPRESSIVE RULER, so she is able to administer the necessary funds, oversee the efficient accumulation of forces, influence the choice of appropriate officers, and inspire effective training regimes and devotion to her cause.

As a mark of respect to the game, I plan to give myself a -1 to all my argument's ratings so as to not advantage too much from being the GM, and determining the strength of arguments in the first place.

Nobgrub raises an EPIC WAAGH

Nobgrub has a STRONG MILITARY therefore recruits for the WAAGH will be easy to find

Nobgrub has LARGE COFFERS therefore arming the WAAGH will be relatively cheap.

Nobgrub has CLEVER WARLORDS therefore the WAAGH will be EPICLY led

Stoneheart amasses a Massive Fortune

1. Stoneheart has Abundant Mines, these allow for the gathering of gems and other precious metals/rocks that add to the treasury

2. Stoneheart has Adept Casters, this allows for the use of scrolls and magic to aid with the finding and increasing of Money

3. Stoneheart has an Honorable Reputation that will insure potential trading partners that they will get a fair deal, increasing the likelihood of trade

The Council of Acotise, watching these events from their undersea capital, are slightly unsettled by the nearby mobilizations and take appropriate precautions:

Acotise raises an OUTSTANDING MARINE FORCE. (in the sense of the American Marines)
1) Acotise has an UNDETECTABLE NAVY to transport its troops.
2) Acotise has AMPHIBIOUS INFANTRY to serve as the backbone of this marine force.
3) Acotise has the UNDERSEA RICHES to pay for such a force.

Flimsywhimble conquers the forests to the northeast!

1. The VICTORIOUS DESTINY of Flimsywhimble demands that they constantly expand and acquire lands which are likely to produce additional MIGHTY BEASTS for their armies.
2. The PLUCKY WARLORDS of Flimsywhimble are eager to lead their forces in conquest and prove their valor against great odds.
3. The GREAT LUCK of Flimsywhimble ensures that the forces which oppose them are caught in just the right place for Flimsywhimble's main army to crush them easily.

I'd like to make a slight change to the rules, starting from this second turn:
Each player can now make two Arguments each turn - a Primary Argument, and a Secondary Argument.
One of the Arguments must relate to your own Empire, and the other must relate to an Opponent's Empire.

Your Primary Argument will be rated as usual, but the Secondary Argument will suffer a -2 to its rating (so Very Strong would be Normal, and Normal would be Very Weak (which will now be known as Pathetic). Unless it is made very clear, the first argument will always be considered the Primary.

Why the change? Because the tendency will always be to use your single argument to advance your own empire, rather than weakening an opponent. This way, you can subvert opposition while strengthening your own position.

And... go! 48 hours to post arguments.

There's still room for other empires to join...

Primary Argument:
The Empire of the Rising Hedgepig will accumulate a HEFTY WAR-CHEST
* The Empire is Sizeable, so the Smuckers can be raised from many Cities
* Mrs Nobblytwink is an Impressive Ruler, able to administrate the Empire effectively
* The Empire has Fantastic Spies, who are able to report if anyone is trying to disguise their wealth

Secondary Argument:
The Principality of Acotise has ARGUMENTATIVE COMMANDERS
* Master-Class Casters are by nature incredibly arrogant
* The undetectable navy are understandably very proud of their achievements and prominent place in defending the Principality
* The new Outstanding Marine Force is led by (hoo-ah!) forceful personalities, convinced that they are always right

Primary Argument:
NOBGRUB will attempt to EXPAND to the MOUNTAINS to the EAST
NOBGRUB has an EPIC WAAGH to go invading
NOBGRUB has LARGE COFFERS to absorb the price of EXPANSION
NOBGRUB'S HARDWORKING WORFORCE will take to the hard work of expansion very well.

Secondary Argument
The Empire of the Rising Hedgepig has to deal with a slow increase of their WAR CHEST
A SIZABLE EMPIRE therefore some of the collected money will be lost or stolen on the way.
FANTASTIC SPIES therefore the people hiding their money will have much more experience hiding it
A GRAND ARMY that sucks up money in salaries, equipment and food, therefore the money that makes it to the capital is used to pay the GRAND ARMY.

Re: Erfworld Matrix Game II - still recruiting but play star

Postby Exate » Wed Aug 01, 2012 12:03 pm

Primary Argument:
Flimsywhimble has acquired POWERFUL ARTIFACTS!
1. The CONQUERED FORESTS TO THE NORTH-EAST were largely unexplored and hid many ruins.
2. The PLUCKY WARLORDS of Flimsywhimble naturally couldn't resist hunting through them for loot.
3. With Flimsywhimble's GREAT LUCK and VICTORIOUS DESTINY, it's all but certain that their searches turned up truly exceptional results!

Secondary Argument:
Nobgrub's attempt to conquer the mountains to the northeast highlights their issues with TREACHEROUS OFFICERS!
1. The STRONG MILITARY with LARGE COFFERS they possess leaves their officers confident that diverting resources to personal objectives won't damage the side as a whole, making them willing to do so.
2. Their CLEVER WARLORDS are smart enough to put together schemes which damage their rivals while leaving their own hands apparently clean, and are quick to seize such low-risk opportunities for advancement.
3. The size of the EPIC WAAGH makes preventing and accurately punishing treachery extremely difficult, encouraging increasing numbers of copycats as the officers realize how effective such dastardly tactics are!

Clarification - how will this work with"Yes, and", "Yes, but" and "No, actually"s? For example, if I chose to deflect your argument about Acotise by saying "Yes, but _____", would that count as my one primary argument?

A good question.

To make life simple, I'm going to say that a Secondary can never be used for a "Yes, And..." or a "Yes, But...." or a "No, Actually..."

You can use your Primary to deflect a Secondary, but since that argument would then relate to your power, your secondary would have to be used to argue against another power.

Does that make sense?

8 hours until the end of the turn.

The Colonel - your secondary argument has no object, just arguments. I'm guessing you want it to say "is poor" or "is bankrupt" or something.

Cheers

Stoneheart will hire Plentiful Casters

1.Stoneheart has a Massive Fortune with which to pay for their upkeep and research.

2. Stoneheart already has Adept Caster meaning any who are hired know they will be working with the best and will get a bump in reputation and knowledge because of this

3. Stoneheart has an Honorable Reputation so the Casters can rest assured they are working for a good cause.

Secondary Argument: Flimsywhimble has to deal with a Rebellious Upstart

1. Flimsywimble has Plucky Warlods, but one of them has too much Pluck and believes they know better than their ruler

2. Flimbsywimble has Conquered Forest to the North-East, and some believe that the Kingdom is headed in the wrong direction

3. Flimsywhimble has a Victorious Destiny, but Great Destiny always has Great Conflict along the way

Primary Argument:
Acotise establishes the city of Auria under the bay (the Golden Sea) to the west of Acotise, through the Strait of the Two Islands.
1) Acotise has an UNDERWATER CAPITAL and the MASTER-CLASS CASTERS that built it, so it has the expertise to build a new underwater outpost.
2) Acotise has the UNDERSEA RICHES to fund the outpost.
3) The effort is supported by Acotise's UNDETECTABLE NAVY, AMPHIBIOUS INFANTRY, and OUTSTANDING MARINE FORCE, which give Acotise water superiority over the area.

Secondary Argument:
(LtDave, this seems rather much like a "No, actually" to me; if this isn't allowed, please use the "alternate secondary" in the spoiler.
Nobgrub conquers the fertile forests to the west.
1) Though Nobgrub has LARGE COFFERS, such coffers may not actually be filled with anything; they may simply be large.
2) The STRONG MILITARY and EPIC WAAGH pose a sizable drain on Nobgrub finances.
3) The ABLE ADMINISTRATION and CLEVER WARLORDS of Nobgrub will recognize this and take action to secure their finances.

Spoiler: show
The Empire of the Rising Hedgepig, the Principality of Acotise, and the Kingdom of Stoneheart establish a TRADE NETWORK.
1) All three nations have great wealth and/or empires; they therefore have valuable commodities to be traded.
2) The three nations are geographically adjacent, making trade and good relations logical.
3) Each nation has a specialty in which it is unparalleled, so there are clear niches for each nation in terms of trade (Archery in Stoneheart, naval combat in Acotise, espionage in the Empire.

The Colonel - your secondary argument can't be a Yes, but...
You might like to change it...

Watermonkey, your argument seems to lack a bad objective... You say they conquer the fertile forests to the West, and if you succeed, then Nobgrub might end up conquering the mountains and the forests (fertile forests, no less).
(And your secondary optional mentions Ascotia, which it cannot do).

True enough. An amended Secondary follows (changes in bold). I'm assuming the general thrust is acceptable for a Secondary.

Secondary Argument:
(LtDave, this seems rather much like a "No, actually" to me; if this isn't allowed, please use the "alternate secondary" in the spoiler.
Nobgrub conquers only the fertile forests to the west this turn.

Ok - I've processed the turn. I've had to make two changes to arguments, since The Colonel's and Watermonkey's Secondary Arguments were both "No, Actually...", Watermonkey's optional other did not relate to other powers only.

Post Time: 249 -
LTDave Argument: The Empire of the Rising Hedgepig will accumulate a HEFTY WAR-CHEST Rating: Strong Goal: 4 Roll: 3 Outcome: SUCCESS

LTDave Secondary Argument: The Principality of Acotise has ARGUMENTATIVE COMMANDERS Rating: Weak Goal: 2 Roll: 3 Outcome: FAIL

The Colonel Argument: NOBGRUB will attempt to EXPAND to the MOUNTAINS to the EAST Rating: Very Strong Goal: 5 Roll: 1 Outcome: SUCCESS

The Colonel Secondary Argument: The Empire of the Rising Hedgepig has FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES Rating: Normal Goal: 3 Roll: 2 Outcome: SUCCESS

Exate Argument: Flimsywhimble has acquired POWERFUL ARTIFACTS Rating: Very Strong Goal: 5 Roll: 1 Outcome: SUCCESS

Exate Secondary Argument: Nobgrub's attempt to conquer the mountains to the northeast highlights their issues with TREACHEROUS OFFICERS! Rating: Normal Goal: 3 Roll: 5 Outcome: FAIL

ETheBoyce Argument: Stoneheart will hire Plentiful Casters Rating: Very Strong Goal: 5 Roll: 5 Outcome: SUCCESS

ETheBoyce Secondary Argument: Flimsywhimble has to deal with a Rebellious Upstart Rating: Normal Goal: 3 Roll: 2 Outcome: SUCCESS

Watermonkey314 Argument: Acotise establishes the city of Auria under the bay (the Golden Sea) to the west of Acotise, through the Strait of the Two Islands. Rating: Very Strong Goal: 5 Roll: 4 Outcome: SUCCESS

Watermonkey314 Secondary Argument: Nobgrub has INTERNAL STRIFE Rating: Normal Goal: 3 Roll: 3 Outcome: SUCCESS
