You can only befriend one Marbit per level right?

Isocates' examination of the statue shows some strange markings on the plinth. Unable to interpret them, he shares the information with the rest of the tribe:

What could it mean?

Clearly, that's enigmatically meaningless.

What's the statue made of? Maybe we can break it down for materials.

 A code! If I'm not mistaken I do believe I spot a 'the' in there*. Assuming this is a simple substitution cipher and the plaintext is english.

*: actually two "the"-s at least; that's the whole point of looking for "the".
The whole point of this is lost if you keep it a secret.

Oh, well I just hadn't finished substituting letters in for each unique character and running it through a decryption algorithm.

Odds are that it's a simple substitution cypher. If not, we'll have to find some sort of key before we can read it.

A substitution cipher! This looks like a job for mathamancy! Let me start my spells...

I think I've gotten every unique symbol identified and replaced with a character. I've definitely noticed a few repeated segments, too.

care to share that so we don't all have to repeat your work?

Yeah, that would be a huge help for decoding.

Well, I can't tell where the spaces are and I'm not completely certain that it's right... (For instance, subbing in the most obvious 'THE' seems to leave other words in unusual circumstances.)

Regardless, here it is:
Code: Select all
a bcdeefdg egghijcg h akh hlmn h
bcgogjoca poahhqp akh aoakn
amekhgj rsmhiaj dg bea k akh
aoak khaktockh ar ngsu

May Octave request the creation of a pair of sickles to assist in the harvesting of Berries?

Huggles is still requesting wood or a wood harvesting tool to become more productive. He offers reasonable repayment rates.
Also how heavily armed are these Otisbits? Shields and axes? Or Swords, with shields, hats and shoes?

I just had an evil thought...one way to make the cipher ten times harder while still being a single substitution is to make a space be a character....we would overlook it. I doubt Dave is that evil, but it is something I will keep in mind for my players in future games.

That said, the spacing is a little arbitrary in the original image, I think we need to disregard it, even if that makes the whole thing harder

You're both wrong. Marbits, I assume, speak either Marbitese or simply Language. There's no easy way to tell what the Otisglyphs would decode to, though.

At the end of this Turn I'll have finished a Saw, which I'm hoping will be more effective than a crude axe for getting wood. You're free to have it if you're willing to donate some of the wood you gather to me for my building projects. Smithy has some grand vision for making watchtowers, defensible walls, siege, and various structures that together could turn our little camp into a possible city site!

When I was one hex north I met Your Marbits arrive in the ash hex to be confronted with 6 Otisbits - 2 with Axes, 3 with Spears, and the last with Sword and Shield.

Then I ran away when negotiations didn't work. They also have a hut. Therefore I think that we need to attack there first. Those with me issue an order to stack with M16 and we shall march to victory!

Sweet! I shall harvest much wood for the epic marbit projects!

New Orders

Assuming there spare Saw by the time things get to me
M22 'Huggles'
Equip Finished Saw in place of berry (or if dropping the berry takes an action do that.)
Harvest Wood with saw (or equip Saw if not already equiped)
Tend Bush
Gather Food

Otherwise
Attempt Sharpenfang into knife
Attempt Sharpen fang into knife
Tend Bush
Gather Food

Edit: The equipment of the Otisbits gives them +6DRM to combat, +2 Combat +2DRM defense, and +2Defense. Assuming they equivalent to basic marbits they got 20 combat, 20 defense, +6DRM combat, and +2 DRM defense. We can probably overcome them if we work hard. I would recommend large scale shield and spear production then charge with 8 spear/shield wielders.
