Proposed Canon

Haffaton was a side founded by Lex Doothis, an adventurous warlord that found a level 2 barbarian capital site and chose to split off from his original side. It's livery was "black with white trim".IPTSF Text 7 At the peak of its power, Haffaton was the largest side in Erfworld, possessing over 70 cities, 15 capital sites, and almost completely surrounding the secret kingdom of Faq.

Under Lex's leadership, Haffaton slowly grew. Its conquest was briefly brought to a halt by a conflict with a pair of allied sides known as Easteros and Westeregg. Charlie, the ruler of a side called El-Efbaum, who had fought a long two front war with them offered an alliance with Haffaton. By pooling Haffaton's Thinkamancer and Predictamancer with El-Efbaum's Lookamancer and Findamancer, their casters managed to produce a Summon Perfect Warlord Spell.

The spell killed the ruler of Easteros outright. Judy Gale, the warlord the spell had summoned managed to croak the ruler of Westeregg by using the Arkenshoes she had claimed from Easteros and gave the Arkendish Westeregg had once owned to Charlie as per their agreement.

Eventually, Olive Branch, one of Charlie's children, betrayed him. His side fell to Haffaton, though Judy Gale chose to let him go. Olive Branch betrayed and croaked Lex, and the side would come to fall under Judy Gale's puppet rule, with Olive Branch technically in charge.

Haffaton continued to grow and became involved in conflict with Goodminton around the time when Wanda popped. Haffaton was unallied at the time,IPTSF Text 6 but later gets Frenemy and Quisling as allies.IPTSF Text 26 After the destruction of Goodminton, Haffaton obtained the services of Wanda.

At some point Haffaton employed High Elves as natural allies.IPTSF Text 27

Spurred on by a prophecy, Faq began searching for a new capital to escape their conquest at Haffaton's hands. Thanks to Jillian's recklessness, Haffaton learned of Faq's existence and fulfilled the prophecy, seizing control of Faq's cities. However, all the people on the side managed to escape, take one of Haffaton's spare capital cities, el-Efbaum, and capture its newly appointed Overlady, Olive Branch.

Olive was put on trial, but Wanda was unable to come up with enough evidence for a conviction and King Banhammer didn't want to execute her anyway. Shortly after the trial, the Olive Garden was set alight by the High Elves, and the fumes from the Heroine Buds caused hallucinations. Olive took advantage of the distraction to escape and become a fugitive. Olive ordered the High Elves to help her escape, but to her dismay, they ignored her, having been bribed by Charlie to break alliance and destroy the Olive Garden. Jillian was ultimately able to hunt her down and slam shut the portcullis, croaking Olive Branch and ending the side.

Speculation

According to Overlord Firebaugh, Goodminton has faced Foolamancy, Thinkamancy, Hat Magic, Weirdomancy and Carnymancy in its fight against Haffaton (in addition to Olive Branch's Flower Power). As most casters are unable to cast outside of their discipline, this likely indicates that Haffaton had a sizeable number of casters. However, by the time Jillian enters the scene, they only seem to have two left, Wanda Firebaugh and Olive Branch, with the rest of them implied to have been croaked by Olive's Heroine buds.

Real World References

The name Haffaton refers to the expression "half a ton" or "half ton" (roughly equal to 1000 pounds).

Another possible interpretation would be the expression "(to) have a ton", as in "I have a ton of units".

Haffaton may also refer to halftone - "technique that simulates continuous tone imagery through the use of dots, varying either in size, in shape or in spacing". This technique is used in printing photographic images - usually black-and-white - in newspapers (which may explain Haffaton's black and white livery).

Haffaton may also be a corruption of "half a town" implying that it is a mere shell.
