Race: Men
Faction: Faq
Class: Caster (Lookamancer)

Proposed Canon

First Appearance: IPTSF Text 29

Brother Orwell was Chief Lookamancer to Faq, during the time before the fall of the first Kingdom.

He was involved in hiding Faq from other sides - particularly in planning movement of units entering and leaving the kingdom, together with Marie Lavraie.

He was much taken with Olive Branch and voluntarily turned to Haffaton at King Banhammer's suggestion. This turned out to be a big mistake. When Jillian tried to fullfill the prophecy to croak Olive Branch, Orwell managed to surprise her by casting a blindness spell, forcing her to attack him.

Real World References

'Orwell' is probably a reference to George Orwell, a British author of the 1900's, known for stories such as 1984, where the protagonist, and many others in the story were constantly observed by cameras, and a state security apparatus known as 'Big Brother'. The first reference to Orwell referred to him as "'big' Brother Orwell." George Orwell was a firm believer in socialism, but he was also very critical and suspicious of several of its standard bearers. This is suitably ironic as Brother Orwell falls for Haffaton's brand of peace quickly and completely.

It is unlikely that Orwell is a reference to 'Orwell Engineering', which is a company that specializes in the production of precision machinery for the hot end of float glass production. There has not been mention of Eyemancy, but it is possible that Lookamancy provides the framework for this. If this is possible, then the Lookamancer Orwell may create spells to enhance vision, or Magic Items, such lenses or eyeglasses to allow for long-distance sight, much as the bats of Transylvito allow a unit to see occurrences in other hexes.
