Hi there. I understand that you are the sole bureaucrat on the Wiki, and would like to request for bureaucrat tools so that I can benefit this site to a greater extent. I'd like to get this site up and running by creating some basic policies (Neutral point-of-view) and processes (Requests for deletion). I'm administrate several Wikis (such as the RuneScape, MechScape, and Supernatural wikis) so I do know what I am doing. I realise that being an extremely new user here, that you may be doubtful of my intentions and I understand fully, but I hope you will consider giving me bureaucrat/sysop tools to benefit the wiki (even if it is temporary/a trial run). Thanks! [[User:Calebchiam|Calebchiam]] 09:46, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

I've got it! Use Kitten Auth.  Normally it shows a bunch of pictures of different animals and asks you to select which one is the kitten, but you can customise it.

So you just load a heap of images of erfworld characters, particularly Wanda, and ask people to select the picture of Wanda.  Should stop even the human opperators unless they actually know the comic, and its simple enough to switch to a different erfworld character like Ansom if they start to figure it out. http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:KittenAuth --[[User:Charles|Charles]] 01:52, 8 May 2011 (UTC)

It may be worth your while to talk to [http://rosettacode.org/wiki/User:Short_Circuit Mike Mol], founder/curator/etc. of Rosetta Code, about the steps he's taken to deal with spammers there. (Admittedly, it's a fairly high-traffic site with a very active user base that watches for such things.)

Notably, one thing that was recently enacted was the requirement that '''every single new account''' must be verified via email. (See [http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Rosetta_Code:Email_Confirmation this page] for details.) That single requirement has dropped spam to zero.

[edit] Request for bureaucrat tools

Hi there. I understand that you are the sole bureaucrat on the Wiki, and would like to request for bureaucrat tools so that I can benefit this site to a greater extent. I'd like to create some basic policies (Neutral point-of-view), processes (Requests for deletion) and customise the MediaWiki pages (which only administrators can edit). I am, of course, a big fan of Erfworld and constantly check the site for Summer Updates. Thanks! Calebchiam 09:46, 15 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit] New Main Page

You probably should lock those templates so that only registered users can edit them, just like the main page. Hell, you might even want re-lock the main page...

[edit] Need something deleted.

I accidentally loaded the image for LIAB 20 to LIAB Text 20. This is gonna cause some problems when the text updates get that far, so it needs to be deleted. I would've taken care of it myself, but I don't have the rights to.

I'll go ahead and send this off to Balder too.

[edit] SPAMMERS

We're getting minced alive by the bots. They're relentless. Please see about installing or setting up some extra anti-spam measures. Cheers mate --Charles 10:28, 27 January 2011 (UTC)

Harknell Note: I've enabled the SimpleCaptcha extension. It's the most basic one just to see what impact this might have on things. If it proves ineffective we can move to a higher level one.

It's proven ineffective. Pickled Tink alerted me to a spam outbreak here; I'm a sysop on another wiki, and we've recently been looking into extensions ourselves. I suggest having a look at Extension:SpamBlacklist, Extension:TitleBlacklist, Extension:ConfirmEdit, and Extension:Check Spambots, as well as possible uses of the AutoConfirmed Users feature. Something that simple is unlikely to stop a bot. I'm just lurking on recent changes at the moment smacking spam down as i see it. I have got to have something to do while waiting for my toes to freeze, and there are worse ways to spend an evening. It is so sad, actually, the quality of vandal you have. I am so tempted to create a "How to vandalise this wiki" page to help them out. As it stands, it is really kind of pathetic. --Pickled Tink 09:12, 6 May 2011 (UTC)

Ok... the latest spam that went up when I posted the message above has convinced me that this isn't really an advertising spam run, but a botnet building run. Contribution of bot Fifcor? A "free 2008/2009 calender". The links all head towards similar destinations. If I were you I'd advise people not to click any of the links they post, and maybe consider contacting an internet security company. --Pickled Tink 11:33, 7 May 2011 (UTC)

[edit] Disable new accounts

Can I suggest that new user accounts are disabled until an automated method for dealing spammers and spam pages is implemented. Marking users and pages as spam is not a conductive way to contribute. We could actually be creating and modifying wiki pages.

[edit] Anti-spam thoughts

It may be worth your while to talk to Mike Mol, founder/curator/etc. of Rosetta Code, about the steps he's taken to deal with spammers there. (Admittedly, it's a fairly high-traffic site with a very active user base that watches for such things.)

Notably, one thing that was recently enacted was the requirement that every single new account must be verified via email. (See this page for details.) That single requirement has dropped spam to zero.
